Orlando for Grown-ups: an Adult’s Guide to a Children’s Paradise

Orlando Balloon Ride

It goes without saying that the majority of UK holidaymakers headed for the Sunshine State will do so with children at the heart of their plans.

Two or three weeks of roller coasters, character breakfasts and water slides may appeal to the young at heart, but the joy on the faces of the little ones is usually the motivation parents require to get through the hectic schedule with sanity intact!

However, there are more grown-up ways to experience this adrenaline-charged pocket of the world that is Orlando.

Hot air balloon rides

Orlando

Whether you are a couple on a romantic getaway or a group of friends looking for some nightlife and entertainment, Central Florida will delight you with its range of attractions.

Those more comfortable flying over the theme parks than surviving the crowds inside them can see things from a completely different perspective on an Orlando Balloon Ride. Their sunrise experience gives you a full hour of flying, followed by a champagne toast and full buffet breakfast.

Disney for grown-ups!

Rose

Even Epcot itself caters more for adults than most other parks. As the sun goes down, World Showcase (the half of the park that is divided into 11 countries of the world) transforms itself into a hub of fine dining restaurants and bars, each with it’s own unique theme. Sup a pint of Guinness in the United Kingdoms Rose and Crown, or a Tequila Sunrise in Mexico, before heading to Japans exquisite teppanyaki restaurant, Teppan Edo.

Nights out at Universal CityWalk

Craving nightlife but want to avoid the theme parks altogether? Universal Studios CityWalk is an ideal option, especially for those staying at the nearby International Drive.

This area boasts an array of eating and drinking establishments with outstanding live music, none more so than Bob Marley – A Tribute to Freedom. This venue specialises in Jamaican cuisine such as mango wings and traditional chicken curry, and is a replica of the great reggae stars Kingston home, featuring live music in the open-air courtyard every night.

Time out at the beach

Cocoa

Couples looking for some much-needed down time could head east to the Atlantic Coast for a day at Cocoa Beach. With its famous 800ft long pier, this beach offers an adult-friendly atmosphere, where surfers and fishermen tend to outnumber the children. The ideal spot for a sunset cocktail, Cocoa is just over an hours drive from Kissimmee and a popular weekend destination for locals.

The attraction of many perfect holiday destinations lies in variety and broad appeal. Whilst Mickey and Minnie will continue to see crowds of young families flock to the place where dreams come true, there is still so much for the grown-ups to experience too!
